U.S. Geological Survey. Historical Water-Quality Data for the High Plains Regional Ground-Water Study Area in Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming, 1930-98. 2001. vi, 65p. includes CD-ROM
Sudocs classification number: I 19.42/4:00-4254
The High Plains aquifer is a huge aquifer that stretches from South Dakota through Oklahoma into Texas. In Oklahoma it includes most of the Panhandle and parts of northwestern Oklahoma. But so much of its water is being pumped for irrigation that the aquifer is having difficulty recharging (sustaining by refilling) itself. It is also highly polluted by the farmlands that it irrigates. It is possible that the ground beneath parts of the aquifer that don’t recharge can collapse like the sinkhole collapses that you have heard about in Florida. This doesn’t examine possible ground subsidence, but looks at the quality of the aquifer’s water. The CD-ROM contains historical data.

What brought the career of General George Custer to the attention of the national public with the “battle” of the Washita in 1868 (known by the Cheyenne Indians as a massacre of their people) ended with Custer’s annihilation at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. The site was established in 1996. The draft plan examines management alternatives, but also has many interesting details about the area.
